District mourns loss of longtime board member Carl Ackermann

It iCarl Ackermanns with heavy hearts that the Oro Grande School District must inform our community of the recent death of longtime board member Carl Ackermann.

Ackermann served on the OGSD Board of Trustees for more than 27 years, from August 1990 up until his death on the morning of Sunday, November 26th, 2017. He was 85 years old.

Ackermann’s life was one of service to others, notably including his proud service to the country as an officer in the United States Air Force. He retired from George Air Force Base and made his home in Oro Grande, a community he consistently worked for the betterment of in partnership with the school district.

“Carl was instrumental in the expansion of the district from 130 students to our current 4,500 students,” OGSD Superintendent Dr. Heather Griggs said. “He was excited to see OGSD expand our options in education for students both through Mojave River Academy and Riverside Preparatory. He was an ardent supporter of student co-curricular activities and enjoyed watching students participate in athletic and academic events.”

Along with serving as a board member, Ackermann previously coached Riverside Prep’s after-school basketball team.

Second grade teacher Suzy Watts met Ackermann 21 years ago, when she first became a teacher in the district, and said she has many fond memories of him.

“He was a big support to the school and highly valued the education and success of all students. He would always show up to the campus with a warm smile and pleasant demeanor,” Watts said. “He enjoyed helping, encouraging and supporting the students. He will be missed!”

The thoughts of the district staff go out to Ackermann’s family, including his daughter-in-law, Janette Ackermann, who teaches kindergarten at Riverside Prep. Ackermann is also survived by his wife, Kum; four sons, Richard, Jim, Jonathan (Debbie), and Sean (Janette); and seven grandchildren, Hannah, Caleb, Derron, Courtney, Drew, Adalyn and Collin.

Carl Ackermann’s memorial service will be held at the High Desert Church Victorville campus on Friday at 2:30 p.m.. The Riverside Preparatory California Cadet Corps, 380th Battalion will serve as the honor guard. In addition, the OGSD Board of Trustees will approve a resolution for recognition of Ackermann’s service during the Dec. 6 regular board meeting.
